What this means in practice is that for every dollar or other currency on deposit there is a minimum of the same in callable assets available. In addition, Sovereign Chartered maintains a liquid-reserves ratio many times the norm in today's banking world.

Most banks operate on a fractional reserve basis, where only a small reserve is kept on deposit available for withdrawals and the balance is loaned out. Worse yet, these loans are then deposited into the same bank or another, and after a small reserve ratio is set aside, the remaining balance is loaned out again. This process can repeat itself eight or more times based on the government mandated reserve assets ratio requirement - hence the need for government deposit insurance schemes because of the inherent vulnerability of debt based banking system.

This multiplier effect has been the engine for rapid credit expansion and economic growth in the post-war economy but it could create the seeds of failure because the whole system is based on debt. It is a fact that there are insufficient assets to back more then a small percentage of withdrawal requests. No amount of government insurance can ultimately cover these requests if confidence in the whole system was ever to face difficulties.

If a new economic crisis comes to pass, conservative institutions such as Sovereign Chartered will prosper because they are not vulnerable to the Achilles heel of fractional reserve lending.
